The Blue Road: Guide to Southern Thailand’s Coastal Paradise

Updated: Mar 19

While the north of Thailand is famous for its misty mountains, the drive south from Bangkok is all about "The Blue Road." This is where the sparkling Gulf of Thailand meets the turquoise Andaman Sea. In a motorhome, it’s the ultimate way to find pristine beaches that the crowded tour buses simply cannot reach.

If you are looking for white sands, fresh seafood, and the legal freedom to sleep by the ocean, here is your guide to navigating The Blue Road.

The Route: Chasing the Horizon

  • Total Distance: ~600–800 km (Bangkok to Krabi/Phuket)

  • Recommended Duration: 5–7 days

  • Road Conditions: Flat, wide highways (Highway 4), perfect for relaxed RV cruising.

Stage 1: The Royal Coast (Bangkok to Sam Roi Yot)

Leaving the bustle of Bangkok behind, the landscape quickly shifts into salt pans and coconut groves.

  • The Stop: Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. The name means "Mountain of 300 Peaks," and it’s a paradise for RVers.

  • The Experience: Because your vehicle is a fully registered RV, you can park at the designated National Park campsites right on the edge of the beach. Hike to the famous Phraya Nakhon Cave in the morning and return to your air-conditioned "home" for a fresh lunch.

Stage 2: The Hidden South (Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon)

This is the heart of The Blue Road. Most tourists fly over this area, but for those on the road, it’s the most peaceful stretch of the trip.

  • The Stop: Ban Krut & Bo Thong Lang Bay. These are wide, crescent-shaped bays with shallow turquoise water and almost no crowds.

  • The RV Advantage: There are several quiet beachfront plots and scenic areas where you can park up legally. Imagine opening your side door to the sound of the waves and making a fresh espresso in your kitchenette as the sun rises over the Gulf.

Stage 3: Crossing to the Andaman (Chumphon to Krabi)

At Chumphon, the road cuts across the peninsula, moving from the Gulf coast to the dramatic limestone karsts of the Andaman Sea.

  • The Drive: This stretch is lush and green, winding through palm oil plantations and towering cliffs.

  • The Destination: Krabi. Arriving in Krabi in a motorhome is spectacular. The cliffs tower over the roads like giants.

  • Where to stay: Look for campsites near Ao Nang or the quiet beaches of Klong Muang. Many local spots are happy to provide a parking spot with power hookups for a small fee, giving you a front-row seat to the sunset.

Pro-Tips for The Blue Road

  1. Fresh Seafood Markets (Talad Sod): One of the best parts of the South is the seafood. Stop at a local market in Prachuap Khiri Khan, buy fresh prawns or snapper, and use your RV’s external gas stove to have a BBQ at your campsite.

  2. Island Hopping with your Home: Want to visit the islands? The Raja Ferry from Surat Thani can accommodate motorhomes. You can literally drive your house onto a boat and wake up on Koh Samui or Koh Phangan.

  3. The Freedom of Registration: Remember, because our fleet is officially registered as motorhomes, you aren't restricted to expensive urban hotels. You have the legal right to stay in Thailand’s stunning National Parks and designated scenic areas along the coast.
